About the Foundation
The Novo Nordisk Foundation is a commercial foundation.
The objective of the Novo Nordisk Foundation is twofold:
- to provide a stable basis for the commercial and research activities conducted by the companies within the Novo Group;
- to support scientific and humanitarian purposes.
Most of the grants are awarded to medical and scientific projects and to selected other research areas.
The decision to award grants is the responsibility of scientific committees, which prioritise on the basis of the research quality of the applications rather than the interests the companies within the Novo Group might have in the individual projects.
The funds for the grants stem from current income from securities, especially returns on the Novo Nordisk Foundation's portfolio of A and B shares in Novo Nordisk A/S. On 31 December 1999, this share portfolio was transferred to Novo A/S, a holding company wholly owned by the Novo Nordisk Foundation.
The Novo Nordisk Foundation approves the allocation of profits within Novo A/S, and is thus able to award significant amounts for research and humanitarian purposes in the future.
